Vinyl fence: what to know

A clean look with less routine upkeep. The profiles, reinforcement and installation work together as one fence system.

Why choose vinyl?

Vinyl fencing is made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It offers privacy and matching gates without the regular staining or painting that wood needs. Choose solid privacy for screening, or an open style where airflow and visibility matter.

Quality depends on more than appearance: the PVC formulation, profile design, reinforcement and installation all matter. UV stabilizers help protect the surface, while impact modifiers improve toughness. These features and any certifications must be checked for the actual product supplied.

Inside the post: pipe & collars

In Derkson’s pipe-and-collar system, a galvanized steel pipe is the structural support inside the visible vinyl post sleeve. Two levelling collars fit around the pipe and support and position the sleeve. The sleeve slides over that assembly, giving the fence its finished appearance.

The collars allow the installer to align the sleeve even when the pipe needs minor correction. Rails connect into routed openings in the vinyl posts. Reinforcing inserts support the rails where the selected system requires them; U-channels finish and retain the sides of privacy infill.

Post depth, soil conditions, fasteners and reinforcement are confirmed for the site. Tall fences, gate posts and cantilever gates can require different supports. Adjustment is an installation feature, not a guarantee against ground movement.

Profile sizes & kit details

Derkson’s privacy planning reference uses 8 ft wide sections and 5 × 5 in vinyl post sleeves. The post kit pairs the sleeve and cap with two levelling collars and a 2⅜ in × 8 ft galvanized pipe. The correct pipe length and reinforcement are confirmed for your fence height and site.

A privacy panel kit uses tongue-and-groove infill, two rails and two U-channels. Inserts and other reinforcements vary by colour, height and vendor. A gate kit is separate and includes the compatible frame parts and hardware.

Profiles are not interchangeable between vendors. For example, the DFS 6 ft Jasper drawing lists 2 × 6 in rails, while Master Halco’s Catalyst range includes other rail profiles. Ask for the exact SKU specification before ordering. Section width and height availability also vary by series.

Weather, care & lifespan

PVC expands and contracts with temperature changes, so installation must allow the specified movement. It becomes less flexible in cold weather; avoid impacts from equipment, snow clearing and heavy objects. Wind performance depends on the complete installed system, not just the vinyl surface.

For routine cleaning, start with a garden hose and mild soapy water. Test cleaners in a discreet spot and follow the product’s care instructions. No regular painting or staining is needed.

Vinyl is intended for long-term outdoor use, but there is no single guaranteed lifespan for every fence. Formulation, sun exposure, weather, installation and care affect performance. A limited lifetime warranty is a set of coverage terms, not a promise that the fence can never fade, move or be damaged.

Warranty: what is covered?

The warranty belongs to the exact manufacturer and product series on your quote. DFS advertises a limited lifetime warranty for eligible registered purchasers; Master Halco supplies different vinyl brands with their own terms. Colour, property use, registration and transfer conditions can change coverage.

A manufacturer’s material warranty and installation workmanship coverage are different. Removal, labour, reinstallation, storm or impact damage, ground movement and normal weathering may be excluded or treated separately. Read the applicable written warranty; do not assume every item or cost is covered.

Before purchase, we confirm the supplied series and its warranty document. Keep your invoice, product details and any required registration. Contact Derkson with photos and your quote or invoice reference if a problem develops.
